“Advanced Vehicle Extrication: Heavy Truck and Bus”

The Providence Firefighter Safety & Survival Conference is please to offer for the first time an advanced skills vehicle extrication training program. The program offering provides responders with cognitive and enabling objectives needed for heavy truck and bus extrication. The knowledge gained will increase the responder’s ability to safely and efficiently mitigate an incident involving a heavy truck or bus crash.

This advanced program offers progressive and complex extrication practical scenarios based on real life incidents that the responder may encounter. And, provides training beyond the basic skills training level of most extrication programs.

Both truck and bus practical evolutions will utilize scenarios involving passenger vehicles. Responders will work together in independent teams during the scenarios requiring the teams to formulate their own strategy. This will require them to think outside the box using prior knowledge and newly acquired techniques utilizing available equipment: rescue lift bags, hand, power and hydraulic rescue tools/equipment, to safely and efficiently mitigate the rescue.

Unlike basic skills programs, attendees having previously achieved a higher level of competency shall work more independently at the operational level with the instructors who will coach participants where needed or requested.

Advanced Truck-Bus Program Prerequisites

This is an advanced skills level practical extrication program, while the Providence Fire Department/Extrication.Com have not had any reportable injuries during past programs. However, there is always a potential for an injury. Due to the increased risk associated with this program, there are prerequisites for attendance.

Prior Training Requirements: All attendees shall have a familiarity with first aid, rescue tools/equipment and basic knowledge of vehicle rescue as described in NFPA Standards for FFI/II:

Operational Level

In order to participate in the ”HOT Zone” during the practical sessions of this two day advanced skills training program, all participants must comply to the following:

*      Have completed and received a certificate of attendance from a formal structured 12-16 hour basic skills motor vehicle extrication program within the last three years by a recognized training faculty. All qualifying programs must follow recognized extrication standards using an accepted lesson plan accepted.

Note: Demonstrations by tool manufacturer’s or retail tool/equipment representatives are not considered accepted.

*      Exclusions: Attendees may present a formal letter (on department letterhead) from their chief officer stating that the attendee(s) have completed a department sanctioned basic skills extrication program by a certified instructor having an expertise in motor vehicle extrication, and the signing officer grants their permission for the applicant to attend the Providence Fire Department’s “Advanced Extrication: Heavy Truck and Bus” program.

However, at any point during the training, if in the opinion of the instructors, it is felt that the participant’s skills levels are not at the basic level and impedes the progress of the program or safety, the Providence Fire Department and Extrication.Com reserve the right to ask the individual to step out side the HOT Zone, and/or limit their participation in the HOT Zone. In such a case, the decision is absolute and attendee will not be entitled to an “operational level” certificate. Instead they will be issued an “awareness level” certificate if they complete the program.

Awareness Level

Any attendee not meeting the requisite for “operational level” may attend, however the individual will be limited according to their skills level as determined by the instructors during all practical sessions.

Who May Attend

This program is open to all emergency responders (fire, police, EMS/rescue, military and tow operators).

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

All participants must have and properly don the following required PPE for this program:

o       Head protection (rescue, structural firefighting helmet or suitable hard head protection).

o       Firefighting/rescue bunker gear or suitable jump suit for extrication.

o       Eye protection: safety glasses or goggles. Note: “Flip down” helmet visors/shields are not suitable for vehicle extrication, and will not be allowed during this program as the sole eye protection, without exception.

o       Safety (steel or composite) toed work or rescue/fire boots.

o       Suitable gloves for extrication.

Note: Extrication.Com will have a limited supply of PPE for sale during the practical sessions. All proceeds to benefit the Providence Fire Department.

Practical Skills Level Identification

For the safety of the participants, and to allow the instructors, safety officers and team leaders to visually identify an individuals level of competency, all participants will be required to wear safety vests noting “awareness” or “operational” skills level, without exception.

Awareness level participants will not be allowed to perform tasks solely without supervision of an instructor and/or operational level participant.

Issued Certificates

Participants will be issued a certificate of attendance at either the “awareness” or “operational” skills level upon completion of the 16-hours of training.

For the safety of course participants and host liability responsibilities, attendees must be present for all sessions; no certificate will be issued for missed hours during this advanced training program. It is up to the individual attendee to ensure that they will be present during all sessions, without exception.

The Providence Fire Department Training Division will send a copy of the student manual on CD to each attendee upon receipt of enrollment application with payment or purchase order from the applicant’s agency. When more than one applicant is enrolled from the same agency, all CDs will be sent to one address.
